Dr John Gregory after qualifying at University wins a prize for a quantum computer implant. Following some initial success using the quantum processor to assist in drug delivery system design, his computer fails resulting in symptoms like a heart attack. He is taken to hospital and meets a young attractive female doctor, Christiana Milanavetto, whose only real interest is in his quantum implant. He is briefly kidnapped under suspicious circumstances and so meets an old-fashioned detective sergeant called George who shares his feeling that the kidnapping some how involves the managing director of the research company that John works for. The trail goes cold with tenuous connections of the kidnapping perpetrators to organised crime and drugs smuggling. Disillusioned with his boss, Andy, and experiencing slow progress at work, John applies to be the science astronaut in a space crew to Mars. The commercial company is particularly interested in the possibilities of John's quantum computer implant in solving real-time problems distant from Earth. A habitat is set on Mars and after some potentially deadly mishaps on the spacecraft, the crew returns to Earth and instant fame. John is attracted to his fellow female crew member, Gabriela but she returns to her old career in Germany resulting in another frustrating relationship. more

Rafe, a disillusioned teenager, a second-generation British national of Muslim parents from India who fled the separation of Pakistan, finds himself unappreciated at home and bullied at school. He joins a local mosque and is befriended by a radical imam who persuades him to save up to travel to a madrassa in Pakistan. Rafe appreciates the attention he is given but has concerns over Sharia law, knowing only that there must be a better way than society dominated by the corruption of politicians and bankers in the West. An ex submarine captain finds himself working for naval intelligence on the China desk and by happenstance crosses paths with Rafe. The Captain slowly uncovers the network of piracy and extremism in which Rafe is unaware but has become inextricably linked through his imam. Greed, corruption and the demand for growth in China has led one company to use piracy as an economic lever in the search for rare earth minerals. The Captain finds himself managing the installation of a production project on an oil platform far into the Pacific Ocean which is attacked by pirates. Meanwhile, Rafe finds himself a less than a enthusiastic jihadist. more
